I walked across the bridge, watching the wind ruffle the leaves and bits of disused trash blow across the sidewalk: a playbill from a cabaret evening, a lottery ticket, a torn bit of newspaper no longer legible. It didn’t matter. They’d long since stopped reporting the new witch hunts, the burnings and the bludgeonings. I remembered someone talking about days of terror in Latin America and this had something of the same feeling. Around the time that I was fourteen years old, the world had begun to change. I didn’t realize it at the time, because I was changing and so it made perfect sense that the world would change with me.

I’m right there with the character. I can see the fliers wafting away as change comes. Lovely six.
How interesting and what great writing. It’s like I was right there.
I love this! Like reading lines of poetry, really. My fav: “I walked across the bridge, watching the wind ruffle the leaves and bits of disused trash blow across the sidewalk: a playbill from a cabaret evening, a lottery ticket, a torn bit of newspaper no longer legible.”
Vivid picture painting, great six!
Intriguing. How old is this person now that they are so aware of their past and the changes that have taken place?
The POV character in The Shape-shifter’s Tale is 24, so when s/he looks back to age 14, it’s “ancient history.”
just beautiful. both the exterior description and the inner monologue. It also told us a story.
Wow! I love this. Great description and that last line…perfect!
Beautiful description. Loved the introduction. Great six.
Wow. I was instantly captivated by your writing. Very well done. I can’t wait to read more next week.
Great descriptions. And yes – when I change I do think the world should change with me too!
I love your writing. All those little details add up to tell so much about the world and the character, and that insight about the world changing and being fourteen is magic.
Evocative six along with excellent world buiding.
The bit about the teen not noticing was perfect. At fourteen you are far too wrapped up in yourself to notice anything else. I also find the subject really interesting too.
This six really drew me in from the beginning.
beautiful words and images, puts me right in there… but the logical part of my brain stops me and asks, how can she see so clearly what all the trash is if it’s blowing across the sidewalk?
She’s looking down as she walks, and the format and typography give it away… it’s not so much that she’s reading the details. Good question, though.
curious about this “brand new world” now! Great six!
I love this! I’m right there with the character and can see that playbill drift by. Well done!
Beautiful description. I love all the detail that tells so much about the setting and the state of the world. Good writing.
Fab! Very atmospheric. Great six 🙂
What a grim picture you paint here. Great snippet!
Your descriptions are wonderful, and the subject matter so creepy.
This snippet packs a wallop. Tension & conflict are apparent and the setting is eerie. Nice!!!!
Rich description, beautifully done, great insight into the character. Love it.
I love how it start kind of idle and dreamy, and then the mention of ‘witch hunts’ slaps you in the face!
Really vivid piece, well done! 🙂
