Weekend Writing Warriors: Sunday 8 February 2014 (Character Interview: Inside the Jump)

I have finished the correspondence with Iric Desnaray. He has his instructions and can be trusted to handle the matter independently. The full complement of the passengers is complete, and I am amused that Lady Luck has seen fit to place Martisset the Younger among them. I may be able to accomplish more than one goal here.

She is on her way to the Original World, or what may prove so — well, that’s a romantic fancy, and perhaps I should let out the leash a bit and let her fulfill that pilgrimage before asking her to return to this world and take up her destiny. A powerful will, that one. She does not fear to oppose me, and that is not altogether a bad thing. When I read the campaigns of dead emperors, the refusal to take counsel of one’s high command is a common failing.

Weekend Writing Warriors: Sunday 1 February 2014 (Character Interview: Inside the Jump)

I am Temn yr Astok, and at this late date it does not matter who my parents were, or who sponsored their marriage. I am the Astok great-clan, pure and simple, except for a few rivalrous upstarts.

There are days I envy the Immortal of T-7, who can order assassinations at will. Our ancestors went through a period where that was customary, and then the practice was banned. Now Karis is nominally a republic, though the great-clans are the more important pieces on the board — not as important as they ought to be, but that is another story. That takes us out beyond Karis, where I have now sent my faithful emissary, Iric Desnaray yr Astok. I created him, and he has the wit to know it, and obeys me.

Karis has never been at war with T-7 and its Immortal, nor have we been at peace; our present relationship is diplomacy: we have something they want, and they have something we want.

Weekend Writing Warriors: Sunday 26 January 2014 (Vampire Variations Redux)

Terence has a new inamorata.

I’ve told him time after time that this never works out. She’s not one of us. She would not have met him had she not worked in a laboratory, bicycling through the humid night to tend her experiments, amid cornfields waving in the darkness, greenhouses glinting by the long road from the agricultural experiment station. (In the Laboratory of the Night)

Erika knew when her mother had come in from patrol. From ancient habit, she woke at each of the hinges of the night, and then at moonset. Each time, she reminded herself that her mother either would return, or would not.

By the time that she came downstairs to take up her position at the sink with the colander, her mother was heating the frying pan for the omelets. (Erika and the Vampire)

And now for something totally different! This week’s eight-sentence excerpt is the first four lines from each of my two Vampire Variations pieces. In the Laboratory of the Night (just released 1/14/2014) and Erika and the Vampire (released last summer).

For more Vampire Variations (this time in a comedic mode), check out my buddy Becca Patterson’s Intervention.

Weekend Writing Warriors: Sunday 19 January 2014 (Inside the Jump)

“I found an incinerator for the worst of the lethal stuff Temn gave me,” Hernan said. “Taryn definitely approved of that, not only for discretion but the public safety, and said I wouldn’t do too badly on the Outposts.”

“Which is, I assume, where you’re intending to honeymoon?”

“Well, yes. I confess it’s a short acquaintance, and somewhat unorthodox by way of courtship, but once you’ve been under fire with someone, I think it counts for some years of more steady company. Many tests of character, you know.” He smiled, “And per warrior tradition, we’ve already gotten acquainted at close quarters; the army of lovers, and all that — wonders for the esprit de corps. The vid-dramas don’t lie about that one.”

Today’s excerpt is part 2 of 2, featuring on of the side stories from Inside the Jump. This one promises to spawn its own romantic action-adventure tale once I have finished the main trilogy.

Weekend Writing Warriors: Sunday 12 January 2014 (Inside the Jump)

“Well, that’s an unusual tale of first meeting,” Martisset said, smiling in spite of herself. “One doesn’t usually disrobe down to the underthings before exchanging names.”

“There was quite a lot of arsenal to unpack,” Hernan said, “and of course I was on pins and needles the whole time, thinking Taryn might just kill me right there. But she heard me out.” He smirked. “And then she gave me a good long look and said she’d been unimpressed thus far with what she’d seen of Karis aristos, but perhaps her sample hadn’t been representative.”

“And then?”

“After that, then we considered proper disposition of the whole mess, and next steps: what to keep, what to ditch, where they were likely to be looking for us, and what assumptions they’d be making about her preferred itinerary for drawing me away and dispatching me discreetly.”

Weekend Writing Warriors: Sunday 5 January 2014 (Character Interview: Inside the Jump)

Not a matter of weeks but of centuries are the great tasks, but of course we live it a moment at a time, and one  must keep everything in balance. So this week passed in calm, on the face of it uneventful. I went about my business knowing that I could not know what Iric was about, and that if things went awry, I would hear only after the fact. There are fail-safes built in for that; some of Iric’s particular implants — the few he would consent to, against the traditional disdain for what has become associated with mere plebes — will signal me should he cease to live.

And then I will act accordingly, and the waters will close over the whole business as if it had never been. If the Immortal and his court be responsible, I will make sure that they do not live to regret it. There are counter-forces which can be turned loose upon T-7, namely the revolutionary faction that abides here on Karis. Unlike some, I do not underestimate them; if the Immortal destroy my work, I shall lay waste to his in turn.

Weekend Writing Warriors: Sunday 29 December 2013 (Inside the Jump)

Martisset said, “What I see is … you, different from me, and no, I never forgot that, because they never let me forget it. But you were in love with flight, and you were fierce, single-minded. I used to watch you in the flight class…”

“And at the edge of the dancing-circle.”

“It took me a while to realize that the two of you were the same person. I mean, I admired you there too… and I already knew some of those songs. My father had recordings he used to listen to while he was working.”

“Those are Sarronny work-songs,” Jehen said. “If the date’s right, I think we were dancing organic and biochemistry.”

Weekend Writing Warriors: Sunday 22 December 2013 (Inside the Jump)

“I think,” Martisset said, with a glance at Arna, “that we might continue this conversation out of earshot of the children.”

Arna rolled her eyes, pulled up the cowl of her passenger’s coverall,  put her visor on again, curled up in the chair, and pulled the console toward her, as if to say that grown-up matters were nowhere so interesting as the thoroughly fictional drama in which she was immersing herself.

“What is she watching?” Jehen asked.

“Oh not watching, playing. I found a copy of Galactic Flight on the Downlink. She’s playing, and running a notebook with all the physics and engineering errors.”

“Not the other one … Voyage to the Original World?”

“No, that one — well, there’s a copy, but I don’t like that game any more. It sounds stupid at this date, but I let Yasmin-the-Third win at it when we were little, and I let her be Captain.”

Thanks to everyone who has commented on these excerpts! This is a complicated tale (space opera and soap opera are first cousins, it turns out) so these excerpts are at most glimpses. I’m still puttering away at endgame, and hoping to have this manuscript wrapped by New Year’s Eve and ready for the beta readers.

2013 has been a very challenging year on the Real Life front, though I continued writing in spite of it. If the fates relent, 2014 will be the year I get editing into my workflow on a regular basis so my faithful readers can check out the final product.

Very best holiday wishes to all!

Weekend Writing Warriors: Sunday 15 December 2013 (Inside the Jump)

The Ship’s Voice boomed, and Karisalay startled, but only a bit. “The Immortal’s dead, oxymoronic as that might sound. And I do wish you’d stop skulking around in the Crew’s Access. You’re giving me a headache.”

Karisalay stared upward, then smiled fondly at Taryn. “You didn’t. Surely you didn’t.”

“No, auntie, point of fact, I didn’t.”
